2026 BOFFO Artist Residency, Fire Island Pines

Dunesong (2026) is an experimental short film made during Man Car Sash’s BOFFO Residency in 2026. Inspired by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul‘s Mysterious Object at Noon (2000), the film was produced in the spirit of Surrealists’ game of Exquisite Corpse, shot on site over their last week in Fire Island Pines. The first artist devised a script for the first section of the film, which was then shot. Next, the second artist watched this first section without any audio or context, subsequently imposing their own narrative logic onto the section, overdubbing it as such. The second artist then devised a script for the second section, which would then be shot. Then, the third artist applied the same process of decontextualisation and re-narrativising,  subsequently devising a script for the third section of the film, which was then shot. Closing the loop, the first artist then watched this final section without audio, before  writing and applying their own narrative voiceover.

The film was scored in collaboration with Chuck Roth. In response to the environs of the island, Roth produced drawings of textures in nature he found during his many walks, responding to each one via improvisational guitar. He then pieced each response together to make the score for the film.
