Poetry Project
“Yi Hou often examines the way that labor is a site of fetish and racialization in the bourgeois expression of homosexuality and whiteness. His work asserts that race and sexualities are technologies that can be applied to enervate the political power of the laboring body across the spectrum of its manifestations. If these are technologies, then yi Hou delights in showing the bourgeois predilection to render technology into affections of pleasure and placations particularly through cultural production and art history. In Coolieisms, aka: The Geary Act’s Rough Trade, 2023, we see another sinewy tattooed back framed in an octagonal window facing prison bars, an allusion to Martin Wong’s 1990 Sacred Shroud of Pepe Turcel. Wong famously eroticized criminality through his work, but yi Hou goes further to connect incarceration and sexuality to the Geary Act of 1892, a criminalizing extension of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Yi Hou cleverly entitled this work “rough trade,” a queer parlance for a fantasized working-class lover. It’s a wink; lusty, sardonic, and perhaps, too knowing about how these fantasies around race and labor often lead to violence, dehumanization, and imprisonment. It’s a painting about the libidinal desire to represent that system of reproduction that keeps trade subject to incarceration, deportation and degrading conditions of work...-&#38;gt;”

Document“In Coolieisms, aka: Born in the USA (Go and Kill the Yellow Man) (2023–24), the American flag faces him the way it did Bruce Springteen on the cover of his 1984 album. But if the Boss is its hero, the yellow man is its enemy. Scrawled across the stripes are grimly sardonic lyrics from the title track. American troops shall gut the gooks. Our guy stands in a counterpoise, absorbed, concurrently a pumped-up prey and just another man on the prowl. He wants to be penetrated, if the star-spangled blue handkerchief on the right side of his leather assless chaps is a reliable indicator. A Manchu-style braid hangs, like a whip, down his back. Lust howls here, carnal and bloody... -&#38;gt;”

Brooklyn Rail “I think the language the paintings create is a sense of mutualism, but also complexity, encryption. The signs—the objects, symbols, the language fragments—are a form of mutually encrypted code, protected through a cipher. And the cipher is the You-I relationship that I share with the subject. I’m interested in opacity, and honoring opacity, in the way that Édouard Glissant wrote a lot about... -&#38;gt;”&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
November 2022Artsy Vanguard “It’s the summer of 1982, and I’m waiting in line outside of an East Village bar. The sign above the door states, “DRESS CODE: cycle leather &#38;amp; Western gear, levis and jocks.” Do I look butch enough? Later in the year, Vincent Chin will be murdered in Detroit, but that’s not yet news. For now, I’m trying to get into Mineshaft and I can’t find my friend who dragged me out to begin with. Apparently, Michel Foucault is inside.-&#38;gt;”&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

Oscar yi HouThe beat of lifeOctober 17—November 16, 2024Opening reception: Thursday, October 17, 6-8pm

The beat of life, thuds, slams, against my sternumThis drum: a sign of lifeskirting around its negation.

James Fuentes is thrilled to present Oscar yi Hou’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, The beat of life.

Made over the past two years, the exhibition takes its title from a fragment of one of the artist’s poems and commemorates the change that has taken place over this span of time. As with the many symbols found across yi Hou’s practice, beat carries several meanings at once: beat as in being pummeled by life; beat as in the throb of nightlife; beat as in the territory delimited by a cop’s patrol. Several progressions in the artist’s practice emerge across this body of work, including his further abstraction of language from calligraphy to dot matrices and an advancement of his symbolic grammar of flames, cranes, and stars. The beat of life speaks to yi Hou’s sustained fascination with the act of painting itself—its technical, aesthetic, and social capacities.

Grounded in portraiture, yi Hou’s work engages deeply in the questions of both personhood and relation that this genre surfaces. Central to his approach is the idea of being-with, privileging the lived experience and intimate dynamics between the artist and sitter, as well as the larger historical, cultural, and stylistic contexts that each portrait takes place within and speaks back to. Yi Hou embeds an ever-evolving, interconnected field of iconography in the image, at times compositionally pronounced and, at others, illegible and almost hidden. With The beat of life, yi Hou moves towards a heightened naturalism, pared-back composition, and distilled symbolism. A renewed sensuality of the artist’s rendering of flesh, fabric, and leather imbues the image with a heightened erotic charge, transcending representation to make palpable the intimacy at hand.

Yi Hou continues his ongoing Coolieisms series, examining the ways in which East Asian-ness has figured within the West's racial imaginary and visual culture. In Coolieisms, aka: The Geary Act’s Rough Trade, yi Hou folds in reference to artistic forbearer Martin Wong’s octagonal Sacred Shroud of Pepe Turcel (1990). Tying Wong’s fetishization of criminality with the longer history of persecution of Chinese Americans in the late 1800s, the work reflects on the Geary Act of 1892, an extension of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which imposed harsh restrictions on Chinese residents in the US, effectively criminalizing their existence. Homoeroticizing the trope of the tattooed Asian gangster as “rough trade,” yi Hou connects carcerality with racialization and queerness. Encoded across the white prison bar bisecting the painting are numbers corresponding to the letters in Wong’s name, subtly linking the two works together.

With Coolieisms, aka: Born in the USA (Go and Kill the Yellow Man), the artist references the iconic album cover for Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA. Lyrics from the song—“go and kill the yellow man”—are embedded within the stripes of the United States flag, alluding to the history of US imperialism in Asia. In this work, yi Hou subverts Springsteen’s popular image of the All-American man via leather fetish gear, with a drag-like hypermasculinity more reminiscent of Tom of Finland, also making reference to the gay semiotics of the handkerchief code. Sailor Moon Rising aka: Pacific Passenger again destabilizes the American masculine iconic—here, the Navy sailor—through a drag-like costuming and effete posturing. A symbol in the composition’s bottom right corner, a fusion of the Philippine and American flags, further alludes to the colonial relationship between the United States Navy and the Philippines.

For Birds of a Feather aka: Chinatown Gangsters, yi Hou portrays self and community on a larger-scale, three-panel format, constructed to sculpturally resemble a folding screen. Operating in the visual sphere, yi Hou's practice often reflects upon the interface between Western and East Asian cultures, including by referencing “Oriental” objects like vases, fans, folding screens, and silks, which have long been exoticized commodities of the Western bourgeoisie since the colonial period. Blending cultural critique of these historical dynamics with tongue-in-cheek personal and queer narratives, the triptych depicts the artist alongside his peers, artists Amanda Ba and Sasha Gordon, both of whom have figured in yi Hou’s previous works. Manipulating tropes from spy movies, action films set in Asia, and Triad gangster flicks, the three appear in single, suited form across each panel, with respective monikers: AGENT CRANE, MADAME BUTTERFLY, and DUKES DRAGON. The numbers 9 and 8, seen in the painting, reference their shared birth year of 1998.

Across each of these works, yi Hou asserts a vastly historical as well as deeply personal view on life. In the exhibition’s titular Self-portrait (25), aka: The beat of life, he continues his tradition of creating a self-portrait after each birthday, here infusing poetry, cranes, and obscured codes within the border of the painting. Yi Hou’s work is testament to having lived in the world—and to all that came before.

The Brooklyn Museum Presents
Oscar yi Hou: East of sun, west
of moonOctober 14, 2022 – September 17, 2023

The exhibition marks Oscar yi Hou’s first solo museum show and is
presented as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s annual UOVO Prize for
an emerging Brooklyn-based artist.

East of sun, west of moon is a timely, focused exhibition of new works by UOVO Prize–
winner Oscar yi Hou, held during a period of heightened violence against Asian and
LGBTQ+ communities across the United States. Composed of eleven recent paintings
that primarily highlight queer Asian American subjects, the exhibition illuminates the
intersectional identities of the artist and his friends. The show opens October 14, 2022,
shortly after the reopening of the Brooklyn Museum’s Arts of Asia galleries on
September 30. Several of yi Hou’s latest paintings incorporate visual references to
objects from the Asian Art collections.

“I’m thrilled that the Brooklyn Museum is hosting the first solo museum exhibition of work
by Oscar yi Hou, an extremely smart and talented young artist based in the borough,”
says Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Senior Curator, Contemporary Art,
Brooklyn Museum. “Simultaneously sensuous and conceptual, his paintings, often of

friends from his circle of queer East Asian diasporic artists, encapsulate long-standing
biases against East Asian and LGBTQ+ communities in the United States. In the current
sociopolitical climate, with increased violence against Asian American and queer
individuals, this show could not be more timely.”

In February 2022, yi Hou was announced as the winner of the third UOVO Prize, an
annual award given to an emerging Brooklyn artist to encourage their practice and
increase visibility of their work. The award entails a solo exhibition at the Brooklyn
Museum, a 50-square-foot mural on the facade of UOVO’s facility in Bushwick, and a
$25,000 unrestricted cash grant. The mural, titled Flock together, aka: a mural family
portrait (2022), draws upon the artist’s painting birds of a feather flock together, aka: A
New Family Portrait (2020) and is on view at UOVO through June 2023. East of sun,
west of moon is on view through September 17, 2023, in the Brooklyn Museum’s fourth-
floor Ingrassia Gallery.

The exhibition’s title frames the artist’s consideration of the in-betweenness of Asian
American identity. Yi Hou’s portraits frequently depict subjects who, like him, are part of
a creative community of queer, Asian, and diasporic artists. His paintings also often
combine what he describes as “Oriental” and “Western” signifiers, including Chinese
zodiac signs, Taoist symbols, cowboy hats, and American flags. Combined with the
artist’s references to queer iconography, figurative painting, poetry, East Asian visual
culture, and representations of East Asian figures in U.S. popular culture, these signifiers
raise questions about who is considered “American” at this time of social unrest and
political polarization. Concurrently, this imagery points to some of the limitations of the
term “Asian American.”

Yi Hou’s working process often begins with a reference image, ranging from
photographic artworks to Hollywood film stills. His new work Sayonara, Suzie Wongs,
aka: Out the Opium Den (2022), for example, references the 1957 film Sayonara. He
inserts his close friends into Marlon Brando’s role, a traditionally masculine, white
American soldier, and Miiko Taka’s role, a hyperfeminine “geisha girl.” This strategy
destabilizes the film’s heteronormative and stereotypical narrative. At almost seven feet
tall, another new painting, titled Old Gloried Hole, aka: Ends of Empire (2022), takes the
format of the American flag. For this work, yi Hou collaborated with the subject, a queer
Filipino friend who recently became an American citizen, and embedded a poem within
the flag’s stripes. The buried text, part of what yi Hou describes as a “poem-picture,”
appropriates the welcome letter that the White House sends to newly naturalized citizens
and alludes to U.S. imperialism in transpacific regions, questioning the notion of the
“American ideal.”

The title of the artist’s Coolieisms series (2021–present) points to the denigrated status
that Americans assigned to East Asian immigrants as early as the nineteenth century.
“Coolie” is a slur originally used against migrant indentured laborers from East and
South Asia in the British colonial era; it remains in use among the South Asian diaspora
(some consider it pejorative while others favor reclamation). In North America, “coolie”
was used specifically against Chinese immigrants during the rise of anti-Chinese
sentiment in the late nineteenth century, which culminated in riots, massacres, and
legislation such as the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. By illuminating this history, yi Hou
contextualizes ongoing, racially motivated violence against Asian American
communities.

By costuming his subjects, including himself, as historical East Asian figures, yi Hou
employs American media and history to explore what he calls “yellow iconicity”—
reclaiming another slur—as well as the perception of East Asian persons as fungible and

identical. In works such as Coolieisms, aka: Leather Daddy’s Highbinder Odalisque
(2022), yi Hou depicts a hypermasculine Chinese figure holding his queue, a long braid
worn by Chinese male immigrants until the twentieth century, as a whip. Two other
works, Coolieisms, aka: Sly Son Goku turns 23 and Cowboy Kato Coolie, aka: Bruce’s
Bitch (both 2021), present self-portrait-like depictions of the artist dressed as Son Goku,
the protagonist of the megahit manga and anime franchise Dragon Ball, and as Kato, a
character played by Bruce Lee in the 1960s television show The Green Hornet. The
Coolieisms series also references cult homoerotic artists such as Tom of Finland and
Bob Mizer, complicating the long-standing American tendency to render Asian men as
extrinsic to traditional masculinity and thus, as yi Hou suggests, to citizenry.

Oscar yi Hou: East of sun, west of moon is organized by Eugenie Tsai, John and
Barbara Vogelstein Senior Curator, Contemporary Art, with Indira A. Abiskaroon,
Curatorial Assistant, Modern and Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum.

OSCAR YI HOUA sky-licker relationAugust 26–September 26, 2021 James Fuentes is pleased to present Oscar yi Hou, A sky-licker relation. Oscar yi Hou’s work is anchored in personhood. While this exhibition presents a series of new portraits, what yi Hou’s paintings really record is the relationship shared between the sitter and the artist. Foregoing fixed representation, the works in A sky-licker relation offer a testament to living alongside others. Made over the past year and a half, these works mark the importance and influence of nearness; the being-with of a queer lifeworld. In each work, yi Hou pulls together a syncretic field of iconography that describes complex layers of identity and relation. Through this process, nearness is not only at the core of the work’s making, but now actively occurs within the visual plane of the work as well. The exhibition title is itself is the result of a series of relations: sky-licker is lifted from Aimé Césaire's poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, which yi Hou first came across in Frantz Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth. Like the evocation of a sky licker, yi Hou’s given name in Chinese refers to a bird cry (一鸣) and he often uses birds as a self-signifier in his paintings and poetry, boundless and in flight. A distinct sense of symmetry can be found in yi Hou’s densely-detailed images, contributing to a compositional logic that is able to hold together a great deal of texture around each of the relationships being represented. Negotiating questions of opacity and (il)legibility, yi Hou employs polysemic symbols such as the five-pointed star, an icon laden with signification between East and West, to emphasize the buried yet multifarious meanings that surround his subjects. In this vein, at times the artist fuses the Chinese calligraphic tradition with graffiti seen on the streets of New York. Yi Hou also makes poetic use of the borders of his works, treating this marginal space as an expression of the interrelation between himself and the sitter—while at the same time reflecting upon the limits of grasping this relation. In doing so, the artist’s paintings of others become a form of address, conjuring new signs and meanings to be shared in space. Here, yi Hou intricately demonstrates, in his words, “painting as a practice of dignity.” Oscar yi Hou (b. 1998 in Liverpool, England; lives and works in New York) received his BA at Columbia University, New York. His work has been included in exhibitions at T293 Gallery, Rome, Italy; Asia Society, New York; Tong Art Advisory, New York; Half Gallery, New York; Rachel Uffner, New York; Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles; and the Royal Academy, UK. A sky-licker relation follows yi Hou’s exhibition of works on paper at JamesFuentes.Online earlier this year. OSCAR YI HOU
A dozen poem-pictures
May 1–June 1, 2021

James Fuentes is pleased to present Oscar yi Hou, A dozen poem-pictures on view through JamesFuentes.Online.

Oscar yi Hou deals with the complexity of identity through layers of iconography, symbolic reference, and personal relation within his works. Bringing together multiple levels of narrative, a world of detail can be found between recurring visual structures and symbols that carry with them diverse meanings. Born in Liverpool, England to Cantonese immigrants, yi Hou's given Chinese name (一鸣) refers to a bird: an auspicious symbol that he reiterates throughout his practice as a stand-in for himself. Other symbols like a sheriff’s star, Chinese knots, and prayer beads are often seen floating alongside fragments of text—inscriptions that fuse English with Chinese calligraphy.

While these symbols and text fragments typically drift among the subjects in yi Hou’s portrait works, adorning and complementing the people he paints, they are at their most salient when seen at the marginal edges of the canvas. In A dozen poem-pictures, yi Hou opts to elaborate and fixate on this marginal space, depicting these symbolic inscriptions as subjects in themselves. Moving through the interstices of language as a diasporic subject, these new works on paper penetrate and further fragment yi Hou’s floating symbology and indecipherable text, continuing his sustained exploration into the impossibilities of translation. Enacting a diasporic ‘burial of language,’ yi Hou de/recodes these symbols and pieces of text. As the density of his ink marks permeate through the paper’s porous surface, yi Hou sinks his poetry into the page, sometimes thickly applying ink onto the back of the paper so that it seeps through to the front. The result is a visual sense of transference between inner life and outer appearance, depositing affective and poetic residue in its wake.

Yi Hou’s many hidden poem-pictures speak queerly of intimate scenes of love, sex, labor, movement, water, smoke, sunlight, and wind (once again returning to the vision of a bird in flight). The gesture of rendering these poems opaque is inspired by Chinese calligraphy and the graffiti he encounters in New York City—both being styles of language that remain undecipherable to outsiders. Some of the poems reference the work of other poets, such as Frank O’Hara and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, or are written in response to the work of other artists, namely Martin Wong’s Saturday Night (1992). Markedly intertextual, A dozen poem-pictures proposes such citation as an act of care, drawing out the relationship between literature and visual art. Structurally, yi Hou’s practice can be seen as the artist’s own iteration of the Chinese tradition of the "Three Perfections”—the classical combination of poetry, calligraphy, and painting within a single visual work. Integrated yet abstract, yi Hou’s works describe a complex personhood and an ever-shifting sense of being alongside alienation: able to combine the two without collapse.

Oscar yi Hou (b. James Fuentes will present yi Hou’s solo exhibition of paintings at the gallery in August 2021.

Crane Seeking Comforts9 April - 11 May, 2021

T293 is pleased to present Crane Seeking Comforts, Oscar yi Hou’s first solo exhibition in Italy.
Eight mid-sized oil paintings on off-white paper will be on display.

The symbolist painting practice of Oscar yi Hou (b. 1998) hybridises Western and Eastern iconography.
Born and raised in Liverpool, England, to Cantonese immigrants, yi Hou’s work is influenced heavily
by his diasporic upbringing. Through his artworks the artist plays with the estrangement of his
‘foreign’ origin— the mythical Orient — establishing a declaration of ‘otherness.’ The vertical format
of this series of works, reminiscent of hanging scrolls, alongside his technical use of black dry-brush,
indexes his deep interest in East Asian iconography. At the same time, he is equally captivated by
North-American symbols such as the sheriff-star, cowboy hats, and the urban graffiti of New York
City. By harmoniously combining these two visual and cultural worlds, yi Hou conjures a seductive
autobiographical visual dialogue between the East and the West.

Crane Seeking Comforts counts on a complex mythology of iconography and symbolism. yi Hou’s given
Chinese name refers to an idiom that involves a bird— as such, the birds that appear throughout his
practise are personifications of the artist himself. In IMUUR2, aka: Cowboy Crane, he represents himself
in the margins as red-crowned cranes, traditionally auspicious birds in the Far East. In other works
such as Twobird, aka: Copulation or Taijitu, aka: Cruising, pigeons are metonymically used to address
and embody a queer narrative. In other works, such as Sphincter, aka: Two-Pines or Moonmad, aka:
Cranekiss poems written by the artist himself are transformed into highly symbolic, quasi-mythological
compositions. For these poem-pictures, yi Hou remixes the classical Chinese calligraphic poem form
with his use of English script, interspersed with his trademark symbols of sheriff stars and Buddhist
beads.

His treatment of signs and language draws inspiration from the poet and philosopher Édouard
Glissant’s text the ‘Poetics of Relation.’ The well-known ‘theory of Opacity’ by the Martinican writer,
which embraces the unintelligibility and impenetrability of cross-cultural communication and
consequently refuting complete knowability as a desirable goal, is one of the fils-rouges of yi Hou’s
thinking. We can see this in the way he approaches the hegemony of English, treating it as if it were
Chinese calligraphy. Yi Hou hides and buries his poems, rendering his native English as ‘inscrutable’
as Chinese may be to the West—and even to himself, by way of his own estranged relationship to the
language. In submerging his text almost hieroglyphically, he kindly solicits from the viewers greater
attention and patience, as he assures that the poems will slowly reveal themselves to a viewer should
they sit with the intricate intimacies of the text a little longer.

In his practice, Oscar yi Hou evokes the ancient Chinese tradition of the “Three Perfections,” classically
used to mark the merging of a poet, a painter, and a calligrapher in a single artwork. By mixing language
both as subject and object matter while also depicting expressive representations of his lived world as a
queer man, Crane Seeking Comforts presents a nuanced insight into the postmodern diasporic condition
of the 21st century.(Press release courtesy of T293 Gallery)

Uncut interview in English for exibart
April, 2021

Hi Oscar, tell us about Crane seeking comforts. How was the theme of the exhibition conceived?

Hello! There are a few themes in Crane Seeking Comforts, each conceived in a different way. The narrative theme came about from ruptures in my personal life, the dissolution of a long-term relationship. The title, “Crane Seeking Comforts”, is meant to harken to the gay personal/classified ads one would find in newspapers back in the day before the internet, listings that were often as pithy as they were heartfelt-- something like “Older Lonely Man Looking for that Special Someone. Lives in Manhattan. Can’t host.”

The titular ‘crane’ is metonymical for myself, as I outline in the self-portrait “IMUUR2, aka: Cowboy Crane”-- and so “Crane Seeking Comforts” refers to my own attempts to re-find intimacy, affection, and company. The other birds in the show— namely the pigeons— are also characterisations/and or metaphors for this act of ‘seeking comfort.’ The poem-picture works depict poems that I wrote that often similarly use the figure of the bird as metaphor to explore themes of relation and intimacy, especially through notions of flight/falling.

So I think the show is largely autobiographical, coming about from my own life-- albeit hidden under a layer of symbols, or hidden via my burying of the text. It’s a sort of layer of protection, to prevent over-exposure of the vulnerabilities in my own life.

Could you explain the significance of the symbols you used in the works: how did you choose them and how did they inspire you?

I try and encode a lot of meaning into my works through using symbols that I repeat and reiterate throughout my practice, so one of my intentions with Crane Seeking Comforts was to sort of outline the symbolic mythology I like to use—which symbol means what, for example. So, like I mentioned before, the self-portrait “IMUUR2, aka: Cowboy Crane” describes how the symbol of the crane throughout my practice is a signifier for myself. I picked the crane over other birds because they’re a very auspicious symbol in East Asian cultures.

I like to use the symbol of the five-pointed star because it’s such a crazy, fraught, multivalent symbol. It’s a symbol of nationalism in many cases—take the stars of the United States flag for example—but if you change the colour to red, it becomes the star of Socialism, which is of course deemed antithetical to America. Another symbol I like to is the Buddhist prayer bracelet, or mala-- as a kid, whenever I would go to China my family would buy them for me, and thus it signifies that personal history for me. In Sphincter, aka: Two-Pines, I hint at the sphincteral quality of the prayer beads—as such they also have a particular erotic signification.

When I fuse the five-pointed star with the prayer bracelet, I end up with the sheriff’s star, a star with circles on the end of each point —a symbol of power, policing, but also one that conjures up the Old Wild West of America. My use of cowboy iconography also speaks to my interest in this American mythic West. I like to juxtapose these signifiers of the old American Wild West alongside signifiers of the ‘Orient’ because the myth of the American West—of self-reliance, independence, Manifest Destiny—often elides the presence of Chinese labourers in America at the time in the mid-late 1800’s. These coolie labourers laid the tracks for the Transcontinential Railroad which was integral for westward expansion, but were erased from history, because their labour ran contrary to the mythic individualistic masculine self-reliant All-American man. America has a long history of anti-Chinese sentiment, including several laws that specifically banned Chinese people, because we were seen as diseased, too foreign, too alien, amongst other things. And of course we see its continuation today, with the rise of hate-crimes this past year against Asian-Americans. It’s all painfully ironic because the United States is where it is today in part because of the labour of those persecuted Chinese labourers during westward expansion.

So I like to think there’s a certain calculus to my symbology. Other symbols include Taijitu, aka: Cruising. ‘Taijitu’ refers to a symbol of Taoism, recognizably the ying-yang symbol, which is why I have the white and black bird circle each other.

Édouard Glissant ‘s Theory of Opacity has strongly inspired your works. Could you tell us how did you express this concept and how this theory has influenced your artistic production?

I like Glissant’s writing on identity, particularly its relational/rhizomatic aspect. His concept of ‘creolization’ is also really pertinent to my own practice of cultural hybridity, being caught between East and West, so to speak. Glissant claims that everyone should have the right to opacity, which is not the same to close one off completely, but instead, as I read it, to let others rest in their specificity and illegibility, rather than to try and fully ‘know’ them or to ‘translate’ them into something consumable.

I think about this in relation to the filmmaker/thinker Trinh T. Minh-ha, in this case specifically her text Woman Native Other. There’s this part where she writes how about ‘clear’ expression is often conflated with ‘correct’ expression, and the imposition of ‘clarity’ is applied onto rhetoric that is designed to persuade others—so thinking about clear commands, imperative sentences—authority, at base. She contrasts this with texts like the Tao Te Ching, which is a fundamental text of Taoism, or the language of Zen Buddhism. They’re both examples of rhetoric that is often seen as cryptic, paradoxical, and mysterious, but ultimately accessible and conducive to greater understanding. Rather than didactically imposing a message onto the reader, they instead invite the reader in, to parse through the language with greater care, concern, and ultimately understanding.

I also this in relation to Rey Chow, an amazing postcolonial theorist/cultural critic—she’s someone I read a lot. Specifically, in her text “The Protestant Ethnic &#38;amp; The Spirit of Capitalism,” she talks about how there’s often a pressure on ethnic and sexual minorities—to overdeterminatively disclose just how ‘ethnic’ or ‘minority’ they are—ultimately in a way that is recognisable, and thus legible and consumable, by the majority, or by those in power/with the most cultural buying power. There’s a big hype in the market right now for figurative works, especially from queer artists or artists of colour—its problematic in a few ways as it impels minority artists to produce work that is legibly ‘minority,’ which might end up being stifling creativity and innovation in the long-run. It’s also a reduction and flattening of the artist’s identity into a price-point, which feels just like a bastardisation and capitalisation of identity politics.

So, my intent in producing English-language poems that are obscured, hard-to-read, and unclear is my own way of responding to these ideas about cultural transmission. I can’t read or write Chinese, and so whenever I see Chinese calligraphy, I experience a simultaneous familiarity and alienation—I feel so intimate with the characters, yet their ultimate meaning escapes me. At this point, I don’t try and understand it—rather I try and appreciate it for what it is. I don’t try and get frustrated. Similarly, my hope is that these poem-pictures (and my use of symbols) avoid an easy, thoughtless consumption. They’re largely illegible, yes, but underneath the treatment of the text is actual legible English. They try and emulate a diasporic, estranged relationship to language. My main hope that they solicit care, concern, and time from the viewer—maybe sometimes frustration, sometimes annoyance— but it’s through their opacity and mystery that they’re meant to invite someone in. Not necessarily to offer themselves up for consumption, I suppose, but more of like a shared dinner if that quite makes sense.

How do you feel regarding this search for intercultural dialogue present in your works? Do you feel included at an intercultural level?

I think that, as someone who has two Chinese parents, but was born and raised in England, I’ve always been intimate with intercultural dialogue. My parents run a Chinese restaurant in the suburbs of Liverpool, which is where I would work as a waiter during my adolescence. I was always very conscious that the food that we would serve to the largely white customers was not at all like the food that I would eat at home—so I’m familiar with the ways that immigrants always have to adapt in order to survive, to produce cultural forms (i.e. Sweet and Sour Pork) that are legible and consumable by the dominant population. But of course, I don’t think this is absolutely negative—it’s a process of creolization, as Glissant might put it, an identity-in-relation. And I’m coming from the position of someone who speaks better French than Chinese!

Coming to America, a few years ago now, was a significant experience for me, interculturally-speaking. I was always Chinese-British, yet upon entry into the states became “Asian-American”, even though I’m not an American national. I became really interested in Chinese-American (and Asian-American) history. I think, in learning about how Chinese people have been in America for over a century—that we have a history that is integral to the making of America as we know it today—I guess I became more assertive with my identity, staking my claim in the racial game, so to speak. I also really love hanging out in the Chinatowns of New York. I feel included in the sense that I know the history of my positionality, but of course Asian-Americans are still elided and excluded from a lot of discourse. It has been changing recently, however.

Your artistic narrative is not only about political-social-cultural inclusion, but it is also about sexual identity. There is a strong queer storytelling frame in your works. Could you tell us more?

Sure. So I discussed before where the title “Crane Seeking Comforts” comes from. I like using animals as signifiers of identity—in other works, I’ve used tigers to signify someone whose Chinese zodiac was the tiger. Other times, I’ve used a butterfly to signify someone who has a butterfly tattoo. But like I mentioned before, the birds here are signifiers, or metaphors, for myself.

“Street-bird of New York, aka: bye bye Birdie” is meant to depict roadkill that one often finds in New York—a bird splayed out. But I wanted the bird to be reborn in a somewhat fabulous fashion—so this piece depicts a rebirth, kind of referring to feeling both broken and reborn after an unhealthy relationship. The piece “Taijitu, aka: Cruising” depicts two birds cruising. I depicted the bottom bird with an erect penis; the top bird is sticking its rear out, its asshole (I guess if it’s a bird it would be its cloaca) signified by the prayer beads. I was trying to draw a metaphorical comparison between the ritualistic act of courtship between two birds, and the act of cruising between two men. Then, “Twobird, aka: Copulation” depicts two birds having sex. The cracked iPhone next to them is meant to indicate a kind of grimy, street-level context—but I wanted to make it glorious, almost dignified. The rays that emanate from the bottom bird’s penis is meant to imply ejaculation. It’s all a bit tongue-in-cheek.

In “Sphincter, aka: Two-Pines,” the poem is about my past relationship. The piece “O’, to be a falling man! aka: Crane Seek Comfort” is a poem that pretty explicitly draws the connection between the two birds and a queer narrative.
 The first few lines are:

“Two birds… two Fagots mating in the air / crane seeking comforts / Falcon of the inner ass / is Real petered out / is Real cool / is Real dead / True-vada king”

DEVIATIONS is a group show of 12 artists, most of whom I know more or less intimately, and most of whom are trans or gay and/or hang out “downtown” (a word which here alludes to but does not in fact denote geography). The works are almost all either portraits or sculptures, some self-portraits and in more than one case, a portrayal of another artist in the show. In this way the works form a web of sociality that supersedes but also links to physical space, much like the non-geographic downtown which the artists represent. You may not personally know these artists, but to know that they largely know each other is perhaps to understand some aspect of how they arrived together here.

Some people who study the mind believe one’s unconscious is populated by so-called “objects”; for example, a maternal object describes a shape into which you fit people who remind you of your mother (which is also a word used to describe someone who raised you in the scene). To portray someone is also, concretely, to make their likeness into a physical object. To place such portraits alongside sculptures—or a painting of a sculpture (Michael Stamm), a photograph of a figure with an object (Pe Ferreira), or of the artist herself with a sculpture as clothing (Martine Gutierrez)—suggests the friction between the person and/as the object, especially in a socio-visual culture that centers visibility and glamor. The totality of objects in your unconscious, and the relation between them, is said to constitute your “object world.”

These works in relief of one another instantiate visceral questions about the nature of subjectivity in relation to the plausible object in one’s mind (a recognizable chair) versus the object in the world, perhaps distorted (a chair with elongated legs, Cameron Patricia Downey). When you look at an object, does it look back at you? (Sam Penn’s two chiaroscuric portraits suggest that a moment of not-looking may still constitute acknowledgement.) Such riddles abound, as do themes around contact, reification and its disruption, and ekphrasis, or the depiction of one work within another.

Or, I would put it another way, and did, in fact, first write about these pieces in language that hews more closely to form, to the object, ekphrastic too but not only, in what follows:

the friction betweenthe world as it is and the world as it we hold it in mind
your body knocking into
your own furniture (that you
acquired in a hope that it would
make people like or respect you
though it is hard to admit)
in the dark
and/also
tracing the curveof a friend’s cheek or hip(a friend you pursued becausebeing near her left a residue)again, obviously,in the dark(or doron whispering something to meon the dancefloor about how he felt in hisbody when painting someoneelse’s body)
(that one might feel studying her own body)
relaxing intothe friction (pressure?)between your friend as she is and your friend as you hold her in mind, deviations between one and the other notwithstanding
–can i ask about a so-called term of art: ekphrasticthing-within-thingyou looking at someone you admire and then she’s in yourelating as rendering, reproducing, making concrete
“once removed,” like a cousin, like trade who never leaves
friction magnified by exquisite attentionor another term of art to refer to the person in the mind: “object” as in, “object world”the acquisitive impulse here, wanting to take someone in, wanting to render them
something taut between what’s imagined and what you touchthat heaves and sometimes collapses with contact(harris said “correspondences”) which is accurate, or
who you are in my mind is part of a web between all our bodies
mediated not as much by possessions, not as much by like and dislikebut the network of friction, pressure, and groping
a generation of young people who talk to each other, represent each other, follow each other into caves and back roomsand so, in our minds, in our choreography, in our renderings of one another, correspond.

Curatorial StatementOscar yi Hou
I began this friends-and-family exhibition somewhat last minute, with no aspirational grand narrative or through-line. But quickly, some threads became apparent. And to be clear, I did not intend for the show to comprise artists of any specific identity, save for artist—the queerness of it all is more a reflection of my lifeworld than it is of anything else. DEVIATIONS, alongside this text, is an attempt to describe, not prescribe, what already exists in the world.
When I’m feeling playful with my semantics, I like to differentiate between a piece of art (an art-object) and an art work. As a kind of gerund, the artwork is the phenomenon by which an art-object does meaningful work onto you. It exerts a force onto the viewer, which moves some part of them.&#38;nbsp;
Bodywork might describe artwork that does work onto the body. Not the viewer’s personal body per se, but rather the discursive formation of the body. In other words, what is conjured in the state’s imaginary by the word body. Through apparatuses like legislature, textbooks, or medicine, the state proscribes what bodies are to exist within the state’s own, well… body.
The state delimits what is a normative body. And it’s through this disciplining that we encounter the deviant body—those forms of people rendered extrinsic to the contours of the state. Bodywork destabilizes the normative body. It works it; resignifies it. It declares its own freedom (to deviate). When we say that one’s body is tea, it implies that the body can constitute its own drama, worthy of awe and gossip, soft gasps. Enough of a deviation to rework the very notion of what a body is and what it could be.
I find that queer art practices often concern themselves with the body, as the body is the interface onto which deviancy is first inscribed. Perhaps medically, at birth… then through ornamentation, aesthetics; an errant earring, jeans fitting too tight. Or too loose. The wrong hairstyle. However deviance finds itself most clockable in its performance, its doing. The sway of a hip, the slack of a wrist. The wrong smile for the wrong person.
Indeed, in light of the ways in which queers perform their bodies—may it be penetrating the other’s body in purportedly exotic ways, medically alchemizing their bodies, or chemical interventions for the basest need of all: the pleasure principle—do we see how bodywork is rendered an unavoidably queer phenomenon.

For an artwork to do bodywork, it does not need to represent a body literally. A figure is the form of a body, yes; but the form of a body can also be its absence, remnant, or impression. A shadow can be a figure, but not a body, for example.

In DEVIATIONS, the works by Cameron, Ser, and Michael contain the absent-presence of bodies. A seat for a body. An installation with objects that bodies have done work to, moved through, then discarded. Or the allusion to a body as recipient of chemical pleasure. These works do work onto the body through their retooling of objects and/or chemicals. The motion, leisure, and pleasure of a body are all implied through its absence.
Several works depict others, or the artists themselves. My painting is of Emilio, for example. Doron’s painting is of Nash; and Nash, Martine, and Juliana have all depicted themselves. (Sam has depicted Max, who has been helping behind the scenes with the show.) At large, DEVIATIONS figures a “web of sociality” (as hannah says) for the viewer. Beauty, gender, and personhood can all be pried into with these portraits.

But perhaps such topics are subsumed by a far more simple and elegant truth: that these works express life. Life as it is, as it could be, as it might as well be, for us.

QUEER OUT T/HEREFebruary 26 - May 1, 2021

Tong Art Advisory is pleased to present QUEER OUT T/HERE, a group exhibition curated in
collaboration with artist Oscar yi Hou, on view February 26 - May 1, 2021. QUEER OUT T/HERE
combines the works of nine artists, Amanda Ba, Tseng Kwong Chi, Louis Fratino, Dominique Fung,
Oscar yi Hou, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Kenneth Tam, Lily Wong, and Martin Wong, who examine the
condition of “otherness” across overlapping lines of queerness and/or East Asian identity. The
exhibition grapples with the often fraught perspectives felt by those situated both inside and outside—
here and there.

Works by the artists Amanda Ba and Lily Wong respond to the overdetermining forces of Orientalism
and fetishism of the Yellow female form, using the painted figure as a site of opposition, resistance
and critique. In Dominique Fung’s work, this tension plays out in the uncanny relationship between
the still-life of inanimate objects and the soft curves of the feminine form.

A similar dialogue permeates Oscar yi Hou’s work, employing symbols of Western culture, tableaus
filled with sheriff stars, cowboy hats, and Christian crosses, placed against sometimes recognizable,
sometimes inscrutable cultural forms of the Far East. In his scroll painting, Martin Wong utilizes a
similar hybridization of East/West, melding the graffiti of 1960’s Downtown New York with traditional
Chinese calligraphic scrolls.

This tension underpins Tseng Kwong Chi’s work, featuring the artist satirically and performatively
deploying very Eastern cultural forms (by wearing a Mao suit), playfully and wittily juxtaposing this
with recognizably American cultural forms (such as the Statue of Liberty.) He plays with the idea of
the ‘perpetual foreigner’ that Yellow people must face, by inhabiting such a figure in order to expose
its contingency and ridiculousness. The photographs of Paul Mpagi Sepuya present another duality;
in this case, his work centers around queer identity subverting the expectations and implications of
traditional portraiture.

QUEER OUT T/HERE illuminates the queer figurative tradition, distilling and reflecting some of the
central themes of visual code-shifting experienced by others in any culture held loosely together in a
complex diaspora.</description>
